It is really great to have the opportunity to introduce myself as the Anglican Priest in charge of St Peter and St Paul. It is a huge honour and privilege to serve and lead in this role in your community. Prior to taking up office here, I served as Vicar in Wellingborough for 8 years and as curate of St Mary’s Goldington for 3 years after ordination at St Albans Abbey. I’m fairly local having grown up in Wymington, schooled at Harrold and Sharnbrook, before reading Government and Public Policy at Northumbria University in Newcastle. Before training for the Priesthood at Ripon College Cuddesdon Oxford, I had been a Police officer and a Publican.
I come to this role passionate that the church reaches out beyond its comfort zone in the way Jesus did. As the Anglican Priest in your town I can say firmly that no matter who you are, what you’ve done, what you believe, what shape your family is, what you look like, or who you love, you will always be very welcome at St Peter and St Pauls. I love meeting new people so please say hello at our 10am or 6pm services, at town events, while I’m walking my 3 dogs, or having a pint out and about. I’m here to serve you and to do all I can to support you. Given my previous roles in the police and running a pub there is little I’ve not heard before, I’ve seen folks at their best and their worst, so I offer you no judgement but a listening ear, counsel if you’d like and a friend if you’re game.
Do let me know how I and our beautiful historic church and Christian community can bless you. I include my favourite verse of scripture which has encouraged me over the years:
He has told you, O mortal, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?
I look forward to meeting you soon
With Blessings,
Ben
We have services at different times of day in both formal and informal styles, and there is something for all ages.
You can find information on the website about our services on Sundays and other days of the week. There are also regular updates about special services at times of the year.
The church is a popular venue for events, and church members organise or are involved in events around the town. You can find details of forthcoming events on the website, as well as information about annual favourites such as the Pancake Race, Cherry Fair and Christmas Tree Festival.
Ours is an active church with lots of different things for people of all ages. People meet to explore faith, take part in activities or just chat over refreshments. The website gives an overview of the different groups with latest information about meeting dates and times.
Our church is 700 years old and has a rich history. It is most famous for being the church where John Newton was curate, and where he wrote the hymn Amazing Grace for a sermon on New Year’s Day 1773. However the church also has links with Henry John Gauntlett, the organist and songwriter who wrote the tune for “Once in Royal David’s City”, and Thomas Scott, a friend of Newton’s and author of “Scott’s Commentary on The Whole Bible”. Our History section provides information on the building and the people associated with it.
